The following essay will break down the East Providence School District for better understanding by students, teachers, or for anyone’s general knowledge. It will generally focus on East Providence High School and its diversity, academics, poverty levels, activities, compliance to the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Act, and other various aspects of the school. The report will analyze the most recent SALT survey released on EPHS as well as look at the diversity across the district and school. East Providence High School and the EP School District work hard at being a successful, flourishing school department. With the teachers feedback, student feedback, recent updated statistics and facts, this report will show the inner-workings and background of EPHS and the school district itself. Ultimately, this report will leave the reader with a greater understanding of East Providence itself.
East Providence High school is located at 2000 Pawtucket Avenue in Providence Country, Rhode Island. The current student enrollment is 2,029 students (NeighborhoodScouts) with approximately 554 students in grade nine, 558 in grade ten, 493 in eleventh grade, and 424 in twelfth grade. (Public School Review) Because of the many students attending East Providence High school, the teacher to student ratio is 13:1, the same as the Rhode Island average. One hundred and fifty-three teachers work in East Providence High school, creating an average class size of about 14 students. Compared to the national average of 15.8 students per classroom, East Providence has relatively average class size. (NeighborhoodScouts) The school offers 27 different clubs and has 27 different sports teams, including cheer leading. (EPHS) The school has some diversity, although the majority of the school is comprised of white students; 80% are white, 14% are black, 4% are Hispanic, 1% are Asian and 1% are Native American. Although there are 14% black students and 4% Hispanic, the RI average shows that this school lacks diversity, with the RI school average being 68% white as compared to East Providence’s 80%.
East Providence has a population of 49,123, making up 4.6% of Rhode Island’s population of 1,067,610 persons. Approximately 17% of the city (aged 25 and older) have a college degree as compared to the Rhode Island average of 33%. This may be one reason why the median household income is more than 600 dollars lower in EP. The median household income for Rhode Island is $39,668 whereas East Providence is $33,683. This difference is a very significant one and could have many possible effects on the school system.
COMMUNITY BACKGROUND:
East Providence has a population of 49,123, making up 4.6% of Rhode Island’s population of 1,067,610 persons. It is the fifth largest city in the state. East Providence is located at 41°48′5″N, 71°21′39″W. (Wikipedia)
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.6 square miles (43.0 km²), of which, 13.4 square miles (34.7 km²) of it is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²) of it (19.33%) is water. Although an inner-city, East Providence lacks diversity. The town is comprised of 86.5% white, 5% black, .6% Native American, 2.7% Asian and 0.1% Native Hawaiian. (Infoworks!)
East Providence has a total of 20,530 households as recorded in the 2000 Census. 27.1% of these houses had children under the age of 18 and 46.3% were married couples. The average household size was approximately 2.33 persons, and the average family size was 2.99. (Wikipedia) The population is comprised of more females than males and a significant part of the population is comprised of people from 0-24 years or age. The population was comprised of 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The female to male ratio is 1:8.68. This means that for every 100 females, there are approximately 86.8 males. Although the males are less predominant in East Providence, the women make less than the males. Males made an average income of $34,342 whereas the women made $26,423 (which does correlate to the statistic that women make 76 cents for every dollar a male makes). This is a significant difference when speaking about just a gender gap. The median household income was $39,108, which is significantly lower than the state average of $51,814. Per capita income for the city of East Providence was $19,257 in 2000, as opposed to the state’s average per capita at $25,937. As the numbers show, East Providence average income levels are significantly lower than the state average. However, despite the lower income levels, East Providence has fewer families and individuals below the poverty level. 6.3% of families are below the poverty level in East Providence which is %1.5 less than the Rhode Island state average. 8.6% of the population in East Providence is below the poverty level and for the state, 11.1% of the population is below the level. This is a very interesting statistic because although the income is much lower, the poverty level is also much lower. These stats show that housing costs are significantly lower in East Providence as compared to the state average. English is spoken as a primary language, but 23.9% speak another primary language at home. This makes it more challenging for the children to learn because their English may not be perfect like many who speak English at home. The Rhode Island average is 20%, which is fairly close to the EP average. (US Census)
To sum up the community background, East Providence is a fairly densely populated area. There are more males then females, yet males still make more than females. The poverty level is very low compared to the state avera ge, which is interesting becuase of the significance between the income levels. East Providence average income is much lower than the state average, yet less people are below poverty level. These facts show that living costs must be lower in East Providence, making it easier for families to pay off mortgages and bills. English is the primary language spoken, but there is a significant group of people that speak another language at home.
DISTRICT SUMMARY:
The East Providence School District is a very large one, spanning from grades K through 12. There are 13 total schools, with 5,482 students within the district. With 525 teachers in the district, the average student to teacher ratio is 11:1. There are 12 Kindergarten teachers, 248 Elementary school teachers, and 265 Secondary Education teachers. The district is also comprised of 343 other employees. There are 42 Elementary guidance counselors, 54 Secondary guidance counselors, 13 Media Specialists/Librarians and 3 Library and Media Support employees. The District office houses 6 Administrators and 18 District Administrative Support. There are 57 School Admins, along with 27 employees to aid the school admins. Other various support services are comprised of 123 other employees.
The district total revenue is $72,430,000 dollars per fiscal year. This breaks down into approximately $11,976 per student. The funding is broken up into the following: 6% Federal funding ($4,184,000), 52% Local Funding ($37,701,000), and 42% State Funding ($30,545,000). Of the money spent, 62% is on teachers, 16% on Student and Staff Support, 7% on Administration, and 15% on Operations and Food Services.
School conduct across the city is very good. The following statistics are from the year 2007, in elementary, middle, and high school combined. There were 59 students who were suspended for assaulting another student, 31 of them in elementary school. Another 104 children were suspended for leaving school grounds during classes. Another 30 kids were suspended for cutting detention, and 21 students were suspended for cutting classes repeatedly. (Infoworks!) East Providence had many suspensions last year, but the state averages were still much higher. There were 23.7 incidents for every 100 students in East Providence High school. The state average was 53.1 incidents, almost double the amount in EPHS. On a lighter note, attendance was at 93%, the same as the state average.(Infoworks!) The stability rate was 91%; 8 percent higher than the Rhode Island average of 83%. Because student attendance is very high and teacher experience is also very high, only 6% of students dropout. Although this seems like a significant figure, the state average is 11%, showing East Providence has a relatively low dropout rate. (Infoworks!)
Teaching Practices are fairly effective according to teachers. 40% of teachers examine students’ work to guide instruction. This seems like a very low number, however, it is the average considering there are a few schools about 40% and many below. 58% of students receive instruction in writing skills, 30% of the materials taught relate to student interests. Only 12% of students revise and edit their papers, which is a very low number compared to other districts, such as Shea High School and Pawtucket where 29% of students revise their papers.(Infoworks!) About 61% of students are taught problem solving and decision making, a very important skill. This is a relatively low number considering that the teachers are trying to make 100% of the students successful. These low numbers have a great relation to teacher surveys that speak about their own development. There are 60% of teachers in the district that report that lack of training is a moderate or major problem. If 60% of teachers see this as a problem, then something should definitely be done to assist the teacher in developing. 24% of the teachers have been in the education field for more than 25 years, a very high number. Only 1% of teachers have been in the education field for under a year, showing how knowledgeable and experienced many of the teachers in East Providence are.
The district is one of the largest in the state, yet still maintains a 11:1 student to teacher ratio. School conduct was fairly good for the year 2007. Between the elementary school, middle school, and high school, very few incidents occurred. Again, the stability rate was 8% higher than the state average, along with the dropout rate. Teaching practices are effective, but teachers in the district believe that lack of training is a problem. Overall, the EP School District is very disciplined and "with the program."
SCHOOL ANALYSIS:
East Providence High School is comprised of 2029 students with 53% of students being male and 47% are female. There are 554 freshmen, 558 sophomores, 493 juniors, and 424 seniors. Because of the great amount of students, the average student to teacher ratio in the high school is 13:1. This is the same as the state average, meaning that even though this school is large, the students do get the same attention as in other schools.
East Providence High School is not a very diverse school. Eighty-four percent of students are white; a number much greater than the next highest with 14% of the students being black. About 87% of students are not eligible for lunch programs, meaning that their families make a sufficient income. This goes right along with the state average of 85%, approximately the same precentage as EPHS. (Infoworks!) Some 99% of students are not learning ESL or special bilingual services. This statistic alone proves that many of the students are proficient in English and do not need much aid. 86% of students do not need special education services. About 12% of the students who do need special education have resource related learning problems. Only 2% of the students are self-contained. (Infoworks!)
The school had a very successful 2008 school year. EPHS met all of their required fields pertaining to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). 93.9% of students graduated, which was way over the state target of 75.3%. Students had a 100% participation rate in both mathematics and ELA. The student average for mathematics progress was 70.6 This is a relatively high number when compared to the state target of 53. For ELA, 81.7 was the average score. This is also relatively high for the state average of 68. (Infoworks!)The mathematics and ELA scores have been sufficiently above the state target, however, they are below the state average. In math, the school average score as 71, two points less than the state average. However, the school has made progress from the year before when it scored an average of 69. For ELA, the school is three points below the state average of 85. They have not progressed from the year before, with the same score of 82. This shows that the school might need to focus a bit more attention on helping to children to become more proficient in ELA. Just because they stats are not with the state average does not mean they are not good. All of the scores were higher than the state target, classifying the school as a school that "has made Adequate Yearly Progress."(Infoworks!)
Students scored fairly low on the SAT's compared to the state average. The average student score for math was 450, 39 points lower than the state average 489. The verbal average for EPHS was 456, compared to the state's 493. 50% of students took the test from EPHS, which was relatively low compared to the state's 60% participation rate. 84% of students taking the test were in college bond programs, and 89% was the state average. (Infoworks!). Teacher views show that they believe many of the students are performing at grade level. Overall, teachers say that 66% of students are performing at grade level. There are 15% that perform slightly above grade level, and only 1% that performs 3 or more grades above the average. 14% of students are performing 1-2 grades below the average according to the teacher. (Infoworks!) This is a very significant statistic, seeing 14% of students not reach the standard. This is something that needs to be improved by the school and district. Also according to teachers, about 35% of students get mostly A's and B's, 17% get mostly B's, and 28% get mostly B's and C's. This leaves 20% that get below B's and C's. The school had a 93.9% graduation rate, but were all the students passing with grades that deserved a diploma? Not to question the school policies, but if 20% of students are scoring below C's, then something should be done to ensure better grade quality before graduation.(Infoworks!)
Overall, EPHS is a successful, growing school. Not a very diverse school, many of the students speak English as their first language. The school, most importantly, met all of the required fields pertaining to the NCLB Act. Of all 21 fields that were posed to the school, all 21 were met. However, students did not score high on their SAT's, having scores significantly lower than the state average. More students graduated than the state avearge, but the grades show that not all of the children are passing with excellent grades. The school is making progress from previous years to help kids succeed, and with a little more teacher power and student drive, this could be an even more successful school.

CONCLUSION:
The data given above is presented in a fashion that can be easily interpreted by parents, teachers, or students looking to learn about East Providence High School. The data allows one to make assumptions about the high school and compare East Providence to other areas in Rhode Island. This report helps the reader to learn more about a school, district, and community in hopes that they will not be going into a new school system without some knowledge of the area.
East Providence is a predominately white, urban neighborhood. The average income is fairly lower than the state average, however, the poverty level is also much lower than the state average. This shows that East Providence has more affordable housing to help more families own houses and send their children to school. The School was given good reviews, as it met all 21 required points of the NCLB Act. School conduct is very good compared to previous years, and school conduct is fairly average when compared to state averages. Teachers are very happy with the school with many of them being experienced teachers with at least ten years in the school. Parent involvement is something that needs to be worked on, according to teachers. With this parent involvement the students may be able to score somewhat higher on the SAT's and Statewide Tests, which would put the school closer to the state average.
The housing costs are significantly lower in comparison with the state, however, the average income is also much lower. The district is perfect for teachers that look to help children that need experience and guidance. Because parental involvement is lacking, teachers are needed to fill the learning void. A vocational school is offered, along with a Special Education program, showing that any type of teacher would be able to work at East Providence High. The school has become more successful as the years go on, with more experienced teachers, district leaders, and parents. With some more parent involvement, the students in East Providence could flourish and someday be a school with above average scores.

This is the same as the state average, meaning that even though this school is large, the students do get the same attention as in other schools.East Providence High School is not a very diverse school .
Characteristics of Students Attending East Providence High School
CONCLUSION:
The data given above is presented in a fashion that can be easily interpreted by parents, teachers, or students looking to learn about East Providence High School. The data allows one to make assumptions about the high school and compare East Providence to other areas in Rhode Island. This report helps the reader to learn more about a school, district, and community in hopes that they will not be going into a new school system without some knowledge of the area.East Providence is a predominately white, urban neighborhood.
